Shelby Safari

Feature Business of the Week:  Shelby Safari

Written By: Kaylinn Swaim

Shelby Safari

325 Main Street

Shelby, Montana  59474

It is with very grateful and excited hearts that we'd like to introduce ourselves to the Shelby community! We are Jeremy and Kaylinn, with our two little ones, Lewis and Lucy. We are officially owners of the Shelby Safari, and are so excited to bring it back to life. Our place will focus on active playtime for kids 10 and under, and we're open for playtime, parties, events, and classes.

We took over another indoor playground down in Billings called Monkey Around back in July and instantly fell in love with play cafes, what they do, and how they help the communities they are in. When we heard Shelby Safari needed a little TLC it didn't take much to convince us that it needed to be re-opened and given new life.

Our operating philosophy is "when the  family thrives, the community thrives", and we wholeheartedly believe that starts by giving young families a place they can be together, play together, and have community together. While we will be staying in Billings as our  main residence, we've got a fantastic team up here to keep operations going and will be making frequent trips up. We've felt so welcomed into your community and are thrilled by your hearts for family and to see the community of Shelby thrive.

It is my pleasure to feature the Shelby Safari in this week’s feature.  I first met Kaylinn & Jeremy back this summer,  they looked me up at the Farmers Market one afternoon.  They were in Shelby looking at the Safari and checking the town out.  I answered all the questions they had about Shelby best as I could, as in any business deal, usually takes time to close on a deal.  I am happy to know they stuck with it, and have completed the process of acquiring the Shelby Safari.  They are young, friendly and energetic which should be a great fit for taking this small business into the future!!   After reading Kaylinn’s write up, she hit on a great point.  When the family thrives, the community thrives!!  While there are many aspects to a thriving community, a great point where it starts is at the family level.  Schools, public parks, activities, medical services for families all fit into the equation.  Each community needs education, day care, and activities for the youth to do.  Without the basics for the young families, a community risks losing young families moving away to different locations.  The young families today are the future to each community.  The Shelby Safari is another one that helps keep young family’s active with another option to do here in Shelby.  Which helps keep those families within the community!!  Thank you Kaylinn & Jeremy for your role in this!!  They too, are the newest member of the Shelby Chamber, just signed them up, on behalf of the Chamber....Welcome to the Chamber!!  I look forward to working with you in the future!!

I will be doing a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Noon, December 1st for the Shelby Safari Grand Re-Opening.  325 Main Street.  Everyone is welcome to attend!!  Hope to see everyone there!!

They will also be open Sunday, December 3rd for the Christmas Stroll!!

Lena is the owner of the Smile Shop. We have all kinds of craft and hobby stuff; Lena has been in business for 13 years come this March 2024. Lena opened her shop on March 3, 2011 at 215 Main St. but in April of 2022 we moved across the street to 202 Main. For the past 11 years we not only sell craft and hobby stuff, Lena also sells Prom and Wedding Dresses plus she does all the sewing and Ironing in the shop. Every year at the Christmas Stroll we have Santa letters in the shop that the kids can write a letter to Santa and then mail it to him in the shop (and the kid’s get a letter back). We have an” Elf on The Shelf” kit that is fun for the whole family. We have lots of Christmas stuff for sale also

Lena has for the past 10 years had the Angel Tree in the shop and if you know anyone that needs help this year either you come down and get the Applications or send them down to get one.

Lena has her daughter Magdalena and a girl named Sky working with her. Magdalena does all the inventory and Sky helps her with it.  Lena does all the sewing and boy does she have a lot to sew. Magdalena helped Lena off and on for the first nine years but for the past 3 years she has been full time with her. Sky just started working for Lena.

You can get a free cup of coffee or tea and if she has time to make cookies you can even get one of them oh and yes you can even get a free smile.

Written By:  Shane Adams

This little shop on main street has tons of items packed within its walls!  From clothing to crafty things to office/school supplies.  If you're on the lookout for anything there's a chance Lena has it!!  Just the other day I was visiting with Lena about various things, and the Christmas Stroll came up.  I was saying I've got a popcorn machine lined up to use….  Oh, she jumped up saying I got something for you.  Came out from the back with popcorn bags!  Wow, I had everything but the bags lined up and that solved that!  Then I thought out loud, I need a scooper to scoop the popcorn into the bags.  Lena jumped up, a few seconds later came back with a scooper!!

Point being she has a lot of various items in her store!!  For those who are planning on coming out for Shop Small Saturday shopping event (November 25), Lena plans on being open plus will be serving ham & cheese crescent rolls too.  She also plans on being open the day of the Christmas Stroll (Sunday December 3), with Santa letters being offered as well!!  Santa letters will continue through much of December too.

For those who know Lena, you are very aware she's very much community minded and pours countless volunteer hours into various organizations, groups and causes throughout the year.  I don't dare to even try to list all of them, as I know I'll end up missing some!!  I applaud you Lena for your dedication and hard work towards the community.  I've personally leaned on Lena a few times for help with the Chamber and never does she complain to me about helping.  From helping water flowers, to doing computer work such as making flyers of any sort, to helping set up meetings, to helping with various events.  She even demonstrated to me how to make cotton candy the first time I broke the cotton candy machine out at the Kite Festival back this early summer!!  Thank you Lena for all the long hours and hard work you put towards helping the community!

Remember if any of you need anything or doing your Christmas Shopping, stop in to The Smile Shop to check out the inventory Lena carries!!

You may have noticed a new boutique has moved into Spa 30, located downtown Shelby. Farmhouse Rags was founded in Joplin, MT in May 2020. The owners of Farmhouse Rags are Jennifer Van Dessel who was raised on the hi-line and Rachel Ramberg from Power, MT.

Rachel and Jen saw a need for trendy fashion options on the hi-line and decided to start an e-commerce store during the covid pandemic. We wanted to be able to provide cute clothes, locally, with quick shipping and amazing customer service.

“We also wanted to make custom apparel for the local farmers, businesses and schools.”- said Van Dessel. We have a top of the line, latest technology, printer that we’ve worked incredibly hard the last few years to be able to purchase. Our design/creation turnaround time is impeccably quick, compared to similar companies. We pride ourselves on quality work in a short time frame.

During 2020, everyone was geared towards shopping locally. We were blessed to have enough support from our small community that we were able to open a storefront in Chester in October of 2021. Since then, we’ve grown by opening another store front in Shelby and are soon to open in the Mane Concern, located in Cut Bank. We are so excited to be able to provide our small communities on the hi-line with the latest fashion trends and custom apparel.

Thank you, Shelby, for being so welcoming. Please stop in and see our wonderful employee, Lynne, and remember to shop local this holiday season.

For a small community such as Shelby, it's always a welcomed sight to see a new business open up for business in a small community.  I realize they have been here now for a few months but I am still excited to give them a feature slot this week!  Thank You for being a part of the Shelby community and doing business in Shelby!

One of the early tasks I took on at the Chamber was to work on building connections with the nearby Chamber of Commerce’s where we can work back and forth together.  In doing so, I attended a Chamber Board meeting in Chester (Liberty County Chamber of Commerce).  That's when I first met one of the owners of Farmhouse Rags, Jennifer as she serves on that Chamber.  After the meeting she inquired about membership towards the Shelby Chamber.  I went out to my truck, grabbed a membership form.  Within a week Farmhouse Rags is a proud member of the Shelby Chamber.  Welcome to Shelby and welcome to the Shelby Chamber!

Stopping into Farmhouse Rags is always one of my stops while I'm out hanging up Chamber posters/flyers for upcoming events.  Their employee working the Shelby shop is always friendly.  If you have not stopped into Farmhouse Rags yet, I recommend stopping in someday to check out their inventory!  They will also be open for Shop Small Saturday Nov 25 & for the Christmas Stroll December 3!!

For my section on Lee Law Office, I will share a short story.

I was standing around at my old job talking with the “coffee crew” who came into the sporting goods store back in Miles City almost every morning.  Ohh, I could write story after story about that crew & those conversations!!  I already accepted my position here at the Chamber in Shelby, gave my notice at the store…  One of these conversations went like this: One of the coffee crew, Rob Muri, was asking about my life change.  Where am I going??  Shelby, I replied…  Oh, I know Don Lee that lives in Shelby.  He explained Don lived in Miles City back in the day and they used to play baseball together.  Just more proof that the world we live in is a small world.  It turns out I also worked with one of his relatives while at the store & know some others too that still live back in that area, The Jordan’s.

Another short story.  I did get some assistance in watering these main street flowers from the Lee Law Office this summer.  Don & Maria stepped up to the task for one of the weekends I needed help with, and so did Caydon getting his Cross Country Team to help for a few days too.  Speaking of watering flowers, my responsibility was the flowers on Main Street and on Central.  Don also volunteered his time by also helping water flowers on Oilfield Ave throughout the whole summer!!  I thank you for helping out and helping support the great town that Shelby, it's greatly appreciated!!  If we lose the little extras like the flowers to help keep Shelby beautiful, what would be next to go after that?!?!  Thank you for doing your part to help keep Shelby alive!!

City of Shelby

Feature Business of the Week:  City of Shelby

Written By:  Lorette Carter

City of Shelby

112 1st Street South

Shelby, MT  59474

(406) 424-5222

We, as a community, are very fortunate to have dedicated and forward-thinking leaders who continually work to improve our community through improvements to our infrastructure – water, sewer, storm drainage, roads, and public facilities.  These projects cause temporary disruption in services and accessibility issues within the community, but the end result is services that benefit the community now and for generations to come.  The storm water drainage project, while inconvenient, will greatly improve how rain events and winter thaws move water within the community- positively impacting roads, households, and commercial businesses.

In addition to the stormwater drainage project, the city was able to install a new water transmission line on the north end of our community to the airport water tank, positively impacting water and fire flow to our north side residents, schools, and businesses.  The replacement of the airport water tank to a larger tank is in progress at this time and emergency generators will be installed within our water system in the near future to further sustain adequate water flow in the event of a power outage within our community.

Next spring, the storm water drainage improvements will be completed and replacement of backup generators at our sewer lift stations will be installed.  All these projects are critical in bringing our city infrastructure up-to-date and more efficient for the benefit of the community!  The city is able to finance these improvements without impacting user fees because of ARPA and State grant funding.

The city has also been working on housing issues.  As part of the Community Development Block Grant Program, the first of two low-and-moderate incomes homes is complete and for sale at 820 10th Avenue South.  The second home is set to be completed by the end of the year.  As per the grant program, homebuyers must meet income eligibility requirements to qualify for purchase of the 3 bedroom- 2 bath homes.  Sale of these homes will be placed in a revolving loan fund in which to continue construction of single-family homes. Three additional LMI homes are planned for the former Bitterroot site as well as four market rate homes, further improving the community’s housing stock.

Also, part of ongoing projects, the city continues to work with the Federal Rail Administration, BNSF, and Montana Department of Transportation on rail safety.  The city has been working with these agencies for several years in addressing safety at our Galena and Highway 2 crossings. The hope is to install wayside horns, greatly reducing the sound impact within our community and double-crossing arms.

The city tries to keep residents informed of projects and events going on weekly.  Follow the city on the City of Shelby Facebook page.

Shelby is a great place to live, work and raise our families.  Together as a community is the only way we can continue to improve Shelby now and for generations to come. Thank you!

Written By:  Shane Adams

With my position at the Chamber I work closely with the people at the city on various projects.  The City is and has been a proud member of the Chamber!!  With the number 1 goal between us, to do our best to make Shelby as best as it can be.  Shelby is a great little town and my goal is to keep it that way, or to do my best to make it even better!!  As Lorette touched base on, while it might be inconvenient or frustrating with the repair/construction going on to the streets, it will pass, and the end result the infrastructure will be improved which benefits the community as a whole!

While there are many projects the Chamber and City work together on to write about, one that people actually could see with their own eyes is the Main Street Flowers Project this past summer.  While the Chamber funded the actual purchase of the flowers (funds generated by Chamber Fundraising efforts, this year was the August Cash Calendar) and was responsible for watering the flowers all summer (or finding people to water).  The city did provide the end loader (and driver) to raise myself & Lorette up to each flower basket to plant the flowers early this summer.  The city provided the use of the water truck and access to the water station to fill the water tank as well.  Without the City providing those items, the Main Street Flowers would not have been possible!  That's just one example of the city and Chamber working together!

I thank the City of Shelby for the continued support they show towards the Chamber and I too support the city in all their efforts to keep Shelby great!!  We have a great working relationship and look forward to keep working with them in the future!

What days are you open, and hours:

Hours of Operation:  Mon. through Fri. 8:00 - 5:00

(I will start early, work late, and work weekends when needed)

How long have you been doing this:

         5 years in January 2024

Past work experience.

Service and Hospitality:  Glamping Camp Butler, Server, Bartender, Cashier, Casino Manager, Casino Floor Runner - Car/Truck/Trailer Sales

What is the most memorable story with your line of work?

I really had to think here.  One day in the middle of winter during a blizzard with about a foot of snow on the ground, I was a brand new rookie and running appointments with my manager.  He was driving a little front wheel drive Toyota four door car.  Not the best choice for deep snow.  We barely made it into the driveway of the house we were visiting.  The couple we met with couldn't believe we made it all the way to their house.  It was a long driveway.  We ended up making two new clients.  The appointment lasted about two hours and it snowed the entire time.  By the time we put our boots back on and opened the door, the car was about buried and the neighbor had to dig us out with his tractor.  We still don't let much get in our way when it comes to helping the retirement community.  A four-wheel drive pickup with good tires and four chains with ice cleats is a much better choice.

Any stories about your work you like to share that most people would not know about?  Good, bad, funny….

I deal with the good, the bad, and the funny.  Is that a Clint Eastwood movie?  No matter what happens on the rollercoaster of life, I keep moving forward and I never give up.  Most people might not realize that one of the most important services I provide to my clients, some more than others, is a prescription review.  Addressing this in the proper manner on an annual basis, can save someone from a very unfortunate surprise the following year.  Making the mistake of failing to review your prescription plan could cost you thousands.  The largest difference I have ever seen, between the old plan and the new one, was over $100,000.  I almost fell out of my chair.  I have her scheduled for next week.  This will be one of my most important appointments of the entire year.  Customer service is the single most important aspect of my career.  Absolute number one above all else.

Why do you run this business?  Just a paycheck, love the industry, family tradition, etc etc?

I started my career in the insurance industry with Bankers Life, have stayed for five years and plan to retire from this industry for so many reasons, and it is far more than just a paycheck.  I am so very grateful for this opportunity and I always try to remember that.  My father was a financial advisor and life insurance salesman for about twenty five years.  He had his own business.  I did not have the luxury of having my father hand this down to me, but I think something rubbed off. I love my line of work because I make my own schedule, which means that I can be there for my son when I need or want to be.  I can drop him off at school and pick him up.  I can be there for sports practice and games.  I can make exceptions or cancellations if something comes up such as an illness or a special occasion.  We can go camping on the weekends.  If his is four days long, then so is mine.  I can adjust my work schedule to meet the needs of my personal and family life.  And I have no boss to tell me what to do all the time.  I am my own boss.  The combination of these two things, make for one of the lowest-stress work environments that I have ever experienced. I travel all over this beautiful state and meet some of the most interesting, well-put-together, talented and genuinely kind people I have ever known.  I've made a few friends and key contacts that have helped me through life.  I help real people find real solutions to real problems and it feels great.  I am more financially independent than I have ever been and can predict a certain portion of my income on a weekly basis without actually having to work to receive it.  I have never had that before.  This alone has saved my bacon a time or two.  Thank you Bankers Life!  There are many other reasons that I love my career but these are the big ones.

Tell us about your family.

I can trace my family lineage back to around the year 900 A.D.  to Hugh Eglington Montgomery of England.  I have English, Scottish, French and Bohemian roots.  I come from a long line of soldiers dating back to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.  My father fought in Korea and later, the Watts Riots.  If your wondering, I tried to join but my feet are too flat.  Maybe that's why I'm still alive.  As for my family at the present, it is just my son Norman and I.  My favorite moments in life are those I get to spend with him.  He's my buddy.  He's 7 and we hang out all the time.  The outdoors is our sanctuary and the place where we do a lot of learning and bonding and having fun.  We love canoeing, camping out in the popup, and fishing for trophy trout and pike.

What brought your focus to Shelby??

The real reason for my focus on Shelby, Montana, is using the powers that I hold through my licenses and my company appointments to truly help a large group of people that really need my help.  Many of the Medicare beneficiaries of Toole and Glacier Counties need help from someone and I seem to be one of the only people who has noticed.  The lack of Medicare education in this area is astounding and potentially financially devastating to those affected.  I have wanted to help people in large numbers for years and I think I have finally found a way.  This is due to a new Medicare option for Toole, Glacier and eight other Montana counties including Sweetgrass, Deerlodge, and Big Horn to name a few.  After spending a week in the area and meeting and networking with pillars of the communities in Shelby, Cut Bank, and Browning, it is obvious that help is needed in the areas of both Medicare education and Medicare planning.  Medicare is one of my specialties and the reason that I am going to be living up north for most of the next seven weeks.

What organizations do you support?

I support local law enforcement and am a member of the Western Montana Fish and Game Association

Any topics you like to write about, feel free to do so, this is your Feature!!

My personal interests/hobbies/pastimes/lifestyle include:  hunting, fishing, camping, handloading, canoeing, hanging out with my son Norman who is the most amazing human ever, skiing (cross-country and alpine), ice fishing, picking huckleberries and mushrooms, and spending time with my friends.  It's hard to fit it all in, but somehow I manage.  The freedoms that are provided to me by my choice of careers really helps.

Written By:  Shane Adams

This week's feature is one of the newest members of the Shelby Chamber.  It is amazing the networking my job has with the vast diversity of calls or emails I get.  Not all those calls or emails go anywhere.  Brian was one of those that went somewhere.  Plain and simple, with my age I do not know much about Medicare.  While Brian does more than just Medicare planning, that was my main focus in our conversations with him.  Medicare options can be complicated and the way I understand it, depending which county in Montana you live in makes a difference as well on the various options!  Evidently, there have been some changes in medicare policy within Toole County that could help some of our seniors.  Education is my goal here today with Brian's feature.  To let people know this and hopefully they can educate themselves and/or others.  I also learned the enrollment period is this time of year with December being the deadline.  Perfect timing to feature him to help get the word out before the enrollment period ends, that some changes in Medicare policy potentially could save some of the seniors in our community money.  My thought is even if today’s feature can help educate 1-2 people to potentially save them money, I'll count it as a success.  If more people than that, even greater success.

Big Reasons in my book: seniors worked their whole lives and they deserve to be helped as best as we can do so, the more they save the more they have to spend on other living expenses, which could mean spending more money locally in Shelby!!

When I get to that age, I hope the younger generation takes the time to think about their elders as well.  If there's a chance to help save me money when I get to retirement age (if I ever get to retire), I hope the same courtesy will be given to me that I'm trying to do here.

Even if you're not of medicare age like I am, you may have friends or family of that age this information may help save someone some money!!  I urge anyone who is on medicare to inquire about the topic to see if they can improve their current policies.

Appley Repair

Feature Business of the Week:  Appley Repair

Written By:  Angie Welker

Appley Repair

916 Birch Ave

Shelby, MT  59474

(406) 424-5777

Appley Repair has been a fixture in Shelby since the late 70’s.  It began as Bob’s hobby while working his maintenance job at the hospital a long time ago!  Bob could fix ANYTHING!  As the shop evolved his nephew Tom was always around and helping here and there!  Bob and Hattie were always active with chamber activities.  Hattie attended chamber meetings for years and held many of the chamber offices!  Bob and Hattie were great supporters of Shelby and rarely missed a home football or basketball game!

In December of 1988 Tom went to work for “Uncle Bob”, they would work side by side for many years until Bob landed in a wheelchair!  Bob would still order pats, chase parts and handle the customers until 2016 when Tom took the shop over!  Tom chose to continue on as Appley Repair, and he still prides the shop name on customer service and diagnosing and fixing your vehicle right the first time!  The shop is almost always open as he is a one man show, friendly and committed to Shelby.  Tom was raised in Shelby, raised his family here!  And continues to support home as much as he can!  Thanks for the shout out Shelby Chamber of Commerce!

Written By:  Shane Adams

Appley Repair I choose for this week’s feature.  Last few features have been centered around healthcare, which is very important.  However, small business America is just as important in my book for a solid economy.  Appley Repair is exactly that, a small business that provides a service that every community needs.  Vehicles breaking down or plain needing to be worked on is just a fact of life, as frustrating as it might be when it does happen.  Nice to know there is a repair shop to get you back on the road whether just going back and forth to work, going on a road trip, or going to the grocery store.

Since moving to Shelby, I’ve learned who’s who and such of all the people around.  Still learning something every day.  A common theme I've heard about Appley Repair is Tom does very good work.  Reputations mean a lot, especially in a small town, and he has earned that over the years while turning wrenches!!  While Appley Repair is not on main street Shelby to visually see the business, that's another reason I like to highlight the business.  It's off the beaten path and when someone needs auto mechanics work done, don’t overlook the shop up on the hill!!  As Angie wrote, Appley Repair has been a part of the Shelby Chamber for many years in one way or another.  Lindsay, daughter of Tom & Angie, is continuing the tradition by carrying the torch at the moment while serving as the Treasurer of the Chamber.  Thank you to everyone associated with Appley Repair for playing a big part in helping make Shelby the great little town it is!!

In this week’s feature, I selected Marias Healthcare.  They are hosting a Fall Health Fair on Oct 5, 9 am to 7 pm at their location here in Shelby.  Thought it would be a good time to feature them and help advertise the event as well.  Go out and check out what they all have to offer at this health fair!!  Just as I mentioned in last week's feature about Northtown Drug.  Healthcare is an important part of any community and we are blessed to have Marias Healthcare in our community providing the wide range of services that they do offer.  The new facility they have now is amazing!  Jamie Brownell offered the Chamber Members this spring a tour of the building, it was amazing to see it at that point in time, then to only see it once it was all completed made me realize even more so how great of a set up the new facility really is!!  I get to go in to chat with Jamie, Rikki, or Carlee periodically on Chamber business, always treated great from the time I walk in talking with the front desk to the other staff, and those individuals each time.

Since I moved to Shelby, I did actually have to use Marias Healthcare services 1 time.  I was sicker than sick could be over New Years into the next week (and no, was not self induced either!).  I was supposed to start working the Chamber job that first week of January, couldn't even get out of bed for those first few days, let alone go to work at a new job.  Great way to start the job, and great way to remember my first few days actually living in Shelby!!  I made an appointment, got some med’s, and felt better shortly after that visit!  Thank You, and Thank you for your continued support towards the Chamber in being an active member and the strong support towards the functions/events that the Chamber provides!!

In every community, certain necessities are needed, healthcare options are needed.  But to go along with Healthcare a pharmacy goes hand in hand!!  Ann Clark with Northtown Drug fills that slot very well.  Considering I’m practically a neighbor across the street here at the Chamber, I get to speak with Ann on a fairly regular basis.  Not only does Northtown fill a great necessity here in Shelby, Ann is always very friendly, and to top it off a hard worker.  I see her truck at the store a lot and work long hours.  Definitely obvious she puts in her time working her business!!  Sometimes I feel bad walking into businesses sometimes, wondering if they are thinking what does this guy want this time?!?!  Ann or any of her employees never made me feel that way about walking in and talking about whatever I have on my chamber plate of the day!  Bunch of good people in that establishment!!

Ann and the Pharmacy are great supporters of the community as well.  I can say first hand she’s supported many Chamber functions by either donations, sponsoring events, or good old fashion volunteering time.  The latest she helped with was done with volunteering time, at both the Shelby & Cut Bank appreciation picnics!  Thank you Ann!!  We appreciate it greatly!!  Plus, a huge plus and much Thanks needed, she wrangled up her son & one of his friends to do much of the watering of the main street flowers this summer!!!  That was a huge bind off my shoulders as I still watered the flowers too many times to count, but without them filling a huge void, I can honestly say Shelby would not have had the flowers on main street this year without them.  Huge Thank You!! And for those who appreciate the Main Street Flowers, next time you see Ann, make sure to Thank her!!!

I look forward to the continued working relationship between Ann and the Chamber.

Ohh, did I mention, the food is worth trying out as well. Pretty tasty, my favorite is the Cuban!

First State Bank of Shelby

Feature Business of the Week: First State Bank of Shelby

Written by: Jayleen Nelson

The First State Bank has been in Shelby since April 10, 1910. They have survived the Dempsey Gibbons fight, World War I and World War II. They are still here today serving Toole and the surrounding counties. The bank has been owned and operated by the Kluth Family since the 1940’s. Byron Kluth, the current CEO and former President, feels the success and growth of the bank has been due to the fact that they always have community service in mind. Many times, a small independent bank can’t keep up with technology advancement that larger banks offer. But, they make it up with service and taking care of every customer as if they’re family. With community betterment in mind the Kluth family has been instrumental in the Shelby Chamber of Commerce. Herb Kluth was the first President of the Chamber, followed by other officers of the bank, his wife Theo, son Byron, and Grandson Brice, as well as other employees of the bank since then.

The Bank specializes mainly in agricultural loans, as well as serving the oil and gas industry, and also plays an instrumental part in the funding of other businesses and main street merchants in the area.

The bank currently employees 17 people. When Byron first started at the bank in 1966, the total assets were 8 million dollars. Today the current assets of the bank are 166 million dollars. The bank and its employees appreciate the loyalty of their customers and try to give that same feeling back to them. Their hope is to continue to grow and service Toole County for many years to come.

Written By:  Shane Adams

In this week's feature, I have selected First State Bank of Shelby.  They are 1 of the 3 Gold members of the Shelby Chamber Membership this year, Thank You!  That is not the only reason they are being featured.  Going into this bank was one of the first places I went when I first took this job, since the Chamber has long banked at this financial institution for many, many years.  I needed to get my name onto the Chamber accounts, everyone at the bank was very welcoming even though I was a totally new face to all of them!  That's when I first met the Kluth’s, ever since I have had some great conversations with both Byron & Brice.  It does amaze me, I can step into Byron’s office for a quick 2 minute question.  Hour later Im stepping out of the office.  Always interesting to hear about the history of the area that he shares!!  Been down a few different rabbit holes in conversation.  Both Byron & Brice have served on the chamber board in Shelby, it's another great source of information and/or perspective when we chat about Chamber related business.  I've learned to listen to any and all sources of information when on the job.

First State Bank of Shelby is another, among many other businesses in Shelby, that are big supporters of the community in general with various events within the community.  Being a gold member of the Chamber, that automatically sponsors them towards most all chamber events.  If that isn’t enough, 2 instances just recently, last month even more supported the Chamber.  While I had many great businesses in Shelby sponsored the event by buying all the food/supplies to be used towards the Sunburst appreciation picnic.  There are always “incidental” items or unforseen expenses that occur during events.  Byron reached out and asked me, can the bank help in any way?  I replied that the incidents would be great if they could cover those items.  He gladly cut a check to cover all the incidentals!!  Thank You!!

Shortly afterwards was the Shelby appreciation picnic that Shelby & Cut Bank Chambers joined forces to do.  A Couple hours before the picnic Bryon called my cell, asking if we needed any more volunteers to help serve as he would help.  At that point I had all my bases covered, but the thought is what counts and I do appreciate the offer to help!!!  Thank You First State Bank of Shelby and the Kluth’s for all the help to the Chamber and also the personal insight to me on various topics!

In this week's feature, I have selected the Elks Club here in Shelby.  The Elks club and its members work hard in this community, and also provide a great venue for events.  One of the first things I did at this job was get the Chamber Banquet planned out, which crossed my paths with the Elks Club.  I worked with Taunya and Ryan with that detail, everything turned out great.  They deserve a big Thank You for all they do.  I literally filled that place with everyone attending!!  I can’t wait till next year's banquet, I think I can grow it even more!!  They had no issue providing the requests I had for the event and delivered perfectly!  I realize the Elks Club and banquet hall has been around for many years and most of you know and have been there many times.  But if any of you need a venue of any sort please keep the Elks Club in mind, they do a great job and offer a nice atmosphere.

While I can not say I have much experience with using Logan medical facilities in Shelby yet since I've moved here in January.  I am, however, glad to know there are services here if or when I need the services.  Hopefully I do not need the services anytime soon though, because if I do I am either deathly sick or in some serious pain!!  I have, however, gotten to know some of the staff from Logan and they have been great to work with on anything I bring to them Chamber related. Many of the staff participate in the events and meetings that the Chamber sponsors or hosts.  Logan Health tries and does play a big role in the community.  Besides the obvious providing healthcare services and employing many staff helping to fuel the local economy.  Logan Health also gives back to the community in many activities and or outreach programs locally.  Just recently the Chamber held the Sunburst (North Toole County) Appreciation Picnic, Kelsey Smedsrud of Logan Health offered to come up to help serve food as just one example.

Other examples include where they are involved within the community:  Chamber Banquet Sponsor, Community tailgate BBQ with Shelby High School, National Night Out, Community Health Fair, School Supply Drive for Shelby Schools, Assisted Living Facility Rummage Sale to support Toole County Medical Auxiliary, Sponsor Bake Sale to Support Toole County Medical Auxiliary, Assisted Living Facility Open House, Family & Friends BBQ, Family Pancake Supper Benefit for activities department, Sponsor Toole County Health Foundation Golf Tournament, Marias Fair Sponsor, Shelby Water Swim Team Sponsor, Recognize local high school students with leadership award throughout the school year, providing scholarships for local high school seniors pursuing degree in healthcare, Collaborate with high school Med Program to provide hands-on demonstrations & activities from local healthcare professionals, Award grants to local schools and teachers, Walk to School Program, Logan Health is official healthcare sponsor for Montana High School Association, Hi-Like Brawl of the Wild Food Drive donation to Sagebrush Food Pantry, Christmas Light Parade/Marias Fair Parade, 4-H Sponsorships/Donations, Arbour Day Clean up day, Montana Range Days Sponsor, along with providing Other Various Awards throughout the community.  As a business owner or local resident of Toole County or surrounding areas alike, it's important to know that places are involved & giving back to the community!!  I look forward to the continued working relationship between the Chamber and Logan Health in the future!

Toole County Health Department houses many grants that specialize in the goals aligning with Alliance for Youth. Now, the two programs work together to bring better opportunities for the community. Toole County Health Department offers WIC, Immunizations, Emergency Preparedness, Injury Prevention, and so much more. Working in the community the staff at TCHD

Written by: Shane Adams

I picked to do Alliance for Youth as a feature as I feel the word could be spread more about what they can offer and who to contact in our community.  Any program helping youth, or anyone for that matter, is something we should all be aware of, I am doing my part in helping spread the word.  Our youth is the future of our country, and on a local scale, our town of Shelby.

When I first started my job, my paths crossed with Mary Miller who was the person in charge from this area of Alliance for Youth.  We talked a few times and I learned more about what this program can do, and also they became members of the Chamber too at that time!  Since then Mary has moved on to working with Donna Whitt at the Justice Court, and Toole County Health Department took over the Alliance for Youth program.  I look forward to working with the gals at the Health Department on future projects!  They include Blair Tomsheck, Darla Winney, & Shiloh Neal.  We already have some irons in the fire that the Chamber can partner up with.  They are very community involved and eager to help, I've seen and worked with them at the Farmers Market’s here in Shelby and they also played a big role with setting up the National Night Out on August 1st. If anyone has any health related questions or what programs Alliance for Youth or the Health Department has to offer stop in or give them a call!

Whistle Stop Bakery & Coffee Shop

Feature Business of the week:  Whistle Stop Bakery & Coffee Shop

Written by: The Whistle Stop

111 Main Street, Shelby Montana 59474

406-424-8015

The Whistle Stop Bakery & Coffee Shop is located on the East end of Main Street in Shelby. They are a family owned business that opened in November 2022.

Everyday you can expect fresh baked cinnamon rolls, scones, muffins, cookies, brownies and more! They proudly serve Montana Coffee Traders coffee and take pride in serving you the perfect cup of coffee. If you need a quick lunch you can grab a chicken salad sandwich served on a freshly baked croissant. If you need a cold treat they serve Cup of Soul’s Farm to Table ice cream which is made in Columbia Falls, MT with local ingredients.

The baker behind the scenes is Monique. She learned to love baking after watching her Grandma Betty bake growing up. Many of the recipes she uses are recipes her grandma has passed along to her.

The Bakery does accept special orders. One of Monique’s favorite things is when someone allows her to have creative freedom with their order and trust her to be part of their special event in a small way. They would want to encourage you to place your orders as far in advance as possible - she does fill up quickly.

Their current hours are Tuesday-Saturday 7:00a to 2:00p but will be modifying their hours beginning August 28th to Monday-Friday 7:00a to 2:00p.

Written by: Shane Adams

Who doesn’t enjoy a fresh pastry or cinnamon roll??  Not many people can say that they don’t enjoy that!  I know I enjoy a sweet cinnamon roll, and I will vouch that the selection and taste of the Whistle Stop is top notch.  Kudo's to Ryan & Monique starting up this nice little business.  From my office at the Chamber the Whistle Stop is Kiddy corner across the street, from my observations many other people feel the same way as there are always cars parked in front with a steady flow of people going in and out of the bakery.

The McDermott’s are always friendly when I go in there along with the staff they have hired, which is always key in any customer based business.  Keep up the good work!

I would also like to add, the Whistle Stop did not hold back when they became members of the Chamber earlier in the year.  Being a new business, they became members of the Chamber right away during the enrollment period this spring.  It was also time of the year I was setting up my first banquet as Director for the Chamber.  Ryan & Monique purchased a table along with extra tickets so their employees and family could attend. Thank you for helping make my first banquet super successful!!  I look forward to working with them in the future!

If any of you reading this have not been in the bakery yet, you need to go in and check it out.  You will not be disappointed!

Crossroads Correctional Center

Feature Business of the Week: Crossroads Correctional Center

Written by: Pete Bludworth

Pete Bludworth has served as the Warden at Crossroads Correctional Center since February 2020. He began his corrections career in 1990 with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and joined CoreCivic in 2014.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Crossroads provides high paying jobs with exceptional benefits for full time employees. Positions for Correctional Officers, Nurses, Mental Health Counselors, Teachers, Case Managers, Clerks, and others are available. A few minutes taken to complete an application can lead to a lifetime of security.

VALUED PARTNER:

When talking about Crossroads, it is important, as a CoreCivic facility, to point out that we strive to make a positive difference in Shelby and surrounding High Line communities.

Crossroads, built in 1999, greatly values our longstanding partnership with the Montana Department of Corrections as we strive to better the public good.

Just last month, Crossroads received the results of an American Corrections Association (ACA) audit with a score of 100% on the mandatory standards and 99.56% on the non-mandatory standards.

These scores result from the team's hard work and dedication at Crossroads!

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

At Crossroads, we're proud to offer our staff quality jobs, competitive wages and benefits, and opportunities for long-term career growth. We have over 150 dedicated employees who work at Crossroads, many of whom call Shelby, home.

Other members of the Crossroads Team are native citizens of Shelby, Conrad, Cutbank, Valier, Havre and other nearby High Line communities. In fact, one of our facility leaders began her career the first day of hiring in 1999!

Many other members of the Team come from across the United States. Whether seeking to set roots in the Big Sky state or to launch their career with a nationwide corporation, the Staff members raise their families and contribute to the local businesses.

Crossroads also supports communities in the High Line through various forms of charitable giving and volunteerism.

EFFORTS TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM:

We know that most citizens involved in the justice system will return to their communities. Like every CoreCivic facility, the leadership and staff at Crossroads are focused on an inmate's reentry back to the community from day one.

Our staff recognizes the significant impact that reentry programming offered at Crossroads can have on those individuals in our care. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to positively impact the long-term outlook of those in our care by delivering evidence-based practices designed to reduce recidivism.

The programs offered at Crossroads, which include, adult education courses, High School Equivalency Testing, addiction treatment, faith-based skills, computer labs, carpentry and cabinet making, have the overall goal of providing the participants opportunities to be better prepared to return to the community and in the end to lower recidivism.

GREAT FALLS-MSU PARTNERSHIP:

Recently, Crossroads partnered with Great Falls College-Montana State University to offer those in our care a unique chance to learn about office programs, acquire skills, and obtain proof of their education. Once interested and qualified students are accepted into the program, they'll be expected to complete the two-semester program in Crossroads' on-site computer lab.

Overall, the program's goal is to help students gain valuable training that will be useful in their transition from prison to working in a business or office setting after their release. After completing the program, students receive a certificate of Applied Science in Office Support, which is an industry-recognized credential that they can use to help them obtain employment in private or governmental agencies as office clerks, administrative assistants and other related positions designed to support the business operations of an organization. The program credit, worth 30 credit hours, can even be transferred to a four-year degree program if the student continues their education after release. More information on this worthwhile program can be found on our website.

First time I stepped foot in a jail cell was April 13, 2023, in Shelby Montana!  Before anyone assumes anything!!  I was not in jail as an inmate, rather as a guest.  Warden Peter Bludworth here at Corecivic offered to give the Chamber Board Members a tour of the prison.  Mabey in my youth there may, or may not have been a time I deserved to spend a night in jail for stupid adolescent decisions:)  That was my first interaction with CoreCivic since I took this job and stepped foot in any type of correctional facility.  The tour was very interesting, in depth, and impressed with how well put together the facility was in all regards where.  Many sections of the complex each serve a purpose.

One detail I will always remember from the tour, I had my truck keys taken away from me at the front gate as well for the tour.  My key chain, I made a dummy round in my reloading of ammo I shot, drilled a hole in the brass and used it as my key chain.  Did not even think of that for the tour but that evidently is frowned upon going through the check in at the front gates.  I apologize for that!!  Thank you again for taking the time to show us around, and to answer all the questions our group had that day.  I can say for the whole group we enjoyed the tour very much!

Since then I've gotten to know Pete on various events here in Shelby, including the Chamber meetings I host.  He tries to put CoreCivic into as many community minded services as possible too.  For instance, just this last week helped out at the National Night Out on August 1.  Earlier in the year helped with the Kite Festival at the airport to name just a couple items.

I would also like to Thank him and CoreCivic for donating all the meat products (Burger & Hotdogs) for the Sunburst Appreciation Picnic the Chamber is hosting in Sunburst August 9th.  That is very thoughtful and we do truly appreciate it!  Continue the good work Pete at CoreCivic, looking forward to working together on future projects with CoreCivic!!

Bowenwork

Feature Business of the Week: Bowenwork

Written by: Marla Hasquet

Address: 925 Oilfield Ave, Shelby Montana

Phone: 406-460-0728

Bowenwork is unique to the field of body work; it is gentle and relaxing and triggers the body's own healing resources, which can result in lasting relief from pain and discomfort. Bowenwork is slow gentle movements over specific muscles, tendons and ligaments; it includes important pauses giving the body time to integrate. The gentle nature of Bowenwork makes it ideal for all ages from newborns to elderly.

I have been a Bowenwork Practitioner for 12 years. To maintain my license I take 16 educational credit hours a year.

The therapy itself was developed over 50 years ago by the late Tom Bowen of Australia. His extraordinary successes in treating thousands of patients were documented by a government inquiry into alternative health practices in Australia in 1975. Since then Bowenwork has been introduced to over 30 countries. Practitioners around the world have embraced Bowenwork for its remarkable effectiveness, its gentle application and the diversity of problems it addresses.

The Bowenwork achieves profound relief from a wide spectrum of conditions: to name a few, back pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, migraines, TMJ, sports injuries, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, colic, constipation, haemorrhoids, bed-wetting in children, tinnitus, as well as reducing physical, emotional and mental stresses. Bowenwork improves joint mobility, lymphatic circulation, and promotes a state of ease and well-being. Bowenwork practitioners have been increasingly expanding the range of conditions that the technique has been found to effectively treat.

One of the first things I think of when I think of Bowenwork. Is that Marla came down to the Chamber office one of my first days at the office starting the new job. She just wanted to welcome me to the community and introduce herself. Which was very much welcomed and thoughtful. I must admit, I never heard of Bowenwork in my past when she said what she did. I have suffered from a bad back for many years, including a back surgery on my back a long time ago, which helped that certain issue. To satisfy my curiosity, I looked it up but still was not 100% sure what it entailed. With the feature of the week I thought Bowenwork would be a great one to feature, to inform the community more information on the service Marla provides. When I asked her about the feature, she offered me a session to help better understand the practice. I gladly accepted as I thought that was a great idea, we set up a date and time. I arrived, and boy, it was an enlightening experience. In my words I'd describe it as between a Chiropractic adjustment and massage therapy, closer to the massage therapy though. She would put pressure and movement of the muscles and ligaments to reset the structure in various spots on the body. Let it rest then do it again on another spot. I will confirm it was very calming and relaxing session. Afterwards we chatted and I made a comment. Did you hear me snoring at all? Pretty sure I literally fell asleep during the session because I was full on relax mode!

If anyone suffers from any issues, mind or body, Bowenwork should be something worth checking into for relief! It could just be your ticket to the relief you're looking for!

Shelby Paint & Hardware

Feature Business of the Week: Shelby Paint and Hardware

Written by: Timothy Moylan

105 W Central Ave

Shelby Montana 59474

(406) 209-7778

Store Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00-5:30; Saturday 8:30-5:00

Shelby Paint & Hardware is a hardware store that has been open since 2007. It was originally owned by Kevin and Elaine Mitchell up until February 2023. I bought the store and took it over on February 8, 2023 and have enjoyed it ever since. The products in the store include paint, hardware, electrical, plumbing, lawn and garden kitchen items, sporting goods, bird and animal food and many other supplies. My day consists of ordering products and helping customers find items. I have been in the electrical field for 25 years and I am a journeyman electrician. I really enjoy helping out people and talking with them on a daily basis. I look forward to expanding the products in the store, such as having a few clothing items in the future. It is really a fun little store to be in and be a part of in this great little community. The support from the Shelby businesses and people is really wonderful as well. Stop in and check us out!

In my opinion, every town, no matter the size, needs a nice hardware store.  Shelby Paint & Hardware fits the bill nicely.  When I came to Shelby in January Kevin and Elaine still had Shelby Paint & Hardware.  I dealt with those 2 a little bit before Tim took over the business.  So far I see Tim doing a great job giving the community of Shelby the hardware & supplies the community needs, just as Kevin & Elaine did.  The transition from what I can see has been going well!!  Every time I have a request for Tim that is Chamber related whether it's hanging up event posters or needing something from the store, he is always helpful and pleasant to deal with.  Considering my background in the sporting goods store, nearly a decade of service, where I sold guns and even Montana FWP licenses too.  Tim & I have traded some conversations regarding the process of selling those items as he sells those products as well.

I wish Tim continued success for many more years to come in this new venture in his life.  Anytime a new adventure starts in life can be nerve-wracking, I'm sure you’ll do well and have fun in the process.  I believe he’s taking the store in the right direction with the additions of products he wants to carry in the future and make available to the consumer.  Also being community minded in a small town is pretty important.  Just this weekend is one example of Tim being just that.  During the Fair Parade, he went above and beyond.  It was a hot day, as I was tailing up the end of the parade just ahead of the police car.  Tim ran up and offered me an ice cold bottled water.  He was handing out free ice cold water to everyone who wanted water.  Gestures like that go a long ways, 2 thumbs up!!

Having a strong American economy I know is built on many aspects, however small business and agriculture are big factors.  Torgerson’s plays into the equation in a big way.  The Torgerson family has built a small business into a business that employs some 300 people within the company.  Plus without Agriculture, what would everyone eat? They help provide food to feed us, and employ a bunch of people on top of that.  I talked to Eric a few times, always super nice and willing to chat with me, even though he is very engaged & busy with the business.  We both share a passion for aviation too, which anyone who is a pilot or has a background in aviation knows going down that rabbit hole can usually lead to some good lengthy conversations!  I hope one day I’ll get to go up flying with him.

With the recent celebrations during the 4th of July, the 100 year mark of the Dempsey Gibbons Fight.  I’m proud to announce that Eric will be the Grand Marshall for the Fair Parade coming up on July 22.  The Torgerson family have been around and in business for over 100 years, I feel it's very fitting for Eric to represent the parade as Grand Marshall.  Since Eric will be the Grand Marshall for the parade, I also thought it is a great week to feature Torgerson's this week for that reason.

While I was in Ethridge snooping around, Jason, manager of the Ethridge location showed me a room full of old pictures and newspaper clippings of the history of Torgerson’s.  I, for one, find that kind of stuff very interesting.  I will be including a small sample of these items on display in this feature!

Ardent Mills is a new Chamber member as of this year, being a Silver Member.  Casey contacted me requesting information on becoming a chamber member pretty right away on behalf of Ardent Mills when I started this job with the Chamber this winter.  They have been great to work with, every time I go to their location they are always super nice and welcoming.  Just as a side note, I could be mistaken, but I believe they are the only business signed up as a Chamber Member actually located on a gravel road.   Even though it's only a couple of miles of gravel, it reminds me of home and I enjoy going there.  Fun fact of the day behind that statement.  Back in Miles City, I lived 17 miles down a gravel road, so every day I went to work at the sporting goods store being a gun saleman or needed to go to town for whatever reason, I traveled lots of gravel!  It's weird, even though I cussed that road all the time as it was rough and wash boarded, hard on vehicles with tearing up tires, cracked windshields, and just plain hard on the truck…I miss the countryside drives.

So, thank you Ardent Mills for being a Chamber Member for obvious reasons, but on a personal level giving me a chance once in a while to hit the gravel, even though it's just a couple of miles!!

After reading the piece Casey put together above about Ardent Mills, I don't think I can add anything more than what she already said.  Besides, it does not matter if the business is located on main street or out on a gravel road.  ALL businesses in and around Shelby are equally important & vital to our local economy.  Whether the business sells merchandise, ships products, or provides a service, it takes every single one of those businesses to make a strong community.

There is a big reason why I picked the Prairie Peddler to be the feature business this week, which I will hit on later on.  But it's not the only reason it is featured.  The atmosphere in this little coffee/gift shop is always welcoming, very friendly, and deserves to be featured on those merits alone.  Every time I walk into this building, it seems there is always a friendly conversation going on between Kelli or one of the staff with the customers getting their coffee!  It shows too, whenever I need to go to the bank across the street, it's usually hard to find a parking space close with the constant flow of customers going into Kelli’s shop!!  No doubt, she's got a good customer base built up!  I say the word “customer” loosely, as I think it would be safe to say the majority of the people walking in the doors are more than just a customer.  I felt the same way towards my customers when I was selling guns & ammo at my old job in the sporting goods store.  I enjoyed seeing the customers & the conversations we had, a good portion of them I would call on as a friend!!

Next week Kelli will be hosting a unique event in her shop.  With the centennial events going on over the 4th of July.  Dr. Gerard Gibbons, grandson of Tommy Gibbons, will be launching his release of his new book here in Shelby.  He is giving the community of Shelby first crack at this book and will be doing a book signing event at the Prairie Peddler on July 3 and July 4.  I hope anyone reading this takes the opportunity to head to the Prairie Peddler while Gerard is there, chat with him and check out his new book & get it signed.  I, for one, am excited to check this book out!  Even if you're not into books, Gerard is a very fun, friendly, & interesting person to talk to!!  Will be at the Prairie Peddler…

July 3, 9 am-11 am

July 4, 8:30 am-10:00 am

The book:  “Shelby 1923.  The Dempsey-Gibbons Fight For Glory and a Little Montana Town’s Impossible Dream”  The book will launch in Shelby first before the world release.  In person sales only to start in Shelby July 3-5 at various events during the celebrations in town.

The book is a beautiful 4 color, 206 page, coffee table style book!
