Recently, the Shelby location received the highest Best Western Brand award, M.K. Guertin Award. Out of more than 2,300 Best Westerns across the US and Canada, Shelby was 1 of 111 to receive this prestigious award. This award honors hotels that have best demonstrated exceptional levels of service, quality, value, and commitment to the Best Western Brand.

Over the course of the last few months, I've gotten to know Jaimie at the Best Western. She is passionate about her job and wants to help in whatever way she can for the community to thrive. Motel/Hotels such as the Best Western are essential to every community, helping boost the local economy on many levels. Travelers on vacation, workers on the road, or for whatever reason, need a place to stay. In turn those people spend money locally at our businesses within the community. The number of employees needed to operate a place such as Best Western contributes to the local economy! If no motels/hotels are in the community, the community would not benefit from any of these benefits! In Shelby it's great to have one of the places to be the Best Western Brand. The Best Western not only helps in the above to the community, they are also great members of the Chamber. The Best Western is a Copper Level (500.00) member of the Chamber while sponsoring and even participating in the events within the community! Keep up the great work Jaimie and all the staff at the Best Western.

A1 Towing & Fleet Service

Shelby, Montana 59474

A1 is a full service automotive shop specializing in repairs & maintenance with your automotive needs is just 1 aspect of our business. Our other main focus is the transport of broken down vehicles all around the area. While our greatest volume of calls come within a 200 mile range, we do go anywhere the call needs, whether it's out of state or even into Canada. I took the plunge into owning my own business when I took over A1 in April of 2023 from Jim Anderson, and have been enjoying running my own business ever since. Prior to owning A1, I worked in this line of work for approx. 15 years with both T & T Diesel & Mark’s Tire gaining great hands on experience from both businesses.
If you are ever in need of a tow or work completed on your vehicle give A1 a call.
Written By: Shane Adams
A1 is one of those businesses when you need their services, you're sure glad they are here to offer their services. It's great to have them locally to call on when those times arise. Whether you're needing a tow when your vehicle broke down along the roadside somewhere, needing a repair in their shop or just simple maintenance like oil changes or tire alignments.
I signed Chris up as a new member of the Chamber last year, and since then I've gotten to know Chris pretty well. He's always been super supportive of the Chamber whenever I call on him or other community items for that matter. Beyond just being a Chamber Member, A1 has donated towards the Chamber Banquet, sponsored the Zombie Fun Run, purchased calendars to support Main Street Flowers. Almost everyday while watering Main Street Flowers in the heat of the summer, Chris came out from his shop while I was watering the flower pot in front of A1 location offering me water or pop to drink so I wouldn't keel over in dehydration, I appreciated the offers!
Chris treats his customers right too. Just very recently, parts on my Tacoma front end were getting worn out, making a clunking noise everytime I turned the wheel. I took it into A1. Needless to say, the job took a little longer in terms of labor than they anticipated and quoted the job for. When it came time to pay my bill when I picked up my truck, Chris charged me what he quoted... Did not charge me for the extra labor incurred needed for the repair. I appreciated that!! Thank you!!
Ponderosa Publications
Feature Business of the Week: Ponderosa Publications (Cut Bank Pioneer Press, Shelby Promoter, Browning Glacier Reporter, Valierian, Liberty Chronicle)
Written By: Jennifer Tronson
Ponderosa Publications
P.O. Box 847
Cut Bank, MT 59427
406-873-2201
The Shelby Promoter has been reporting the local news, sharing community members’ accomplishments and promoting Shelby & Toole County for over 100 years. It has been a staple of the community, providing many with different jobs and withstanding the tests of time-world wars, the Dempsey Gibbons debacle, the Great Depression and, most recently, the COVID pandemic, just to name a few.
The Shelby Promoter came to be in 1912 and for many years the Promoter was owned by different generations of the Kavanagh family until Brian and LeAnne Kavanagh’s retirement from the newspaper business in 2022.
Many changes have taken place at the Promoter, one of the biggest being when it stopped printing here in Shelby and had to be sent out, first to Great Falls and then Bozeman, in the early 2000’s. Another major change occurred when COVID pandemic hit in 2020. The four newspapers Kavanaghs owned- The Promoter, the Cut Bank Pioneer Press, The Valierian and the Glacier Reporter combined into one edition. More change came when the Kavanaghs retired and the combined newspaper was purchased by Jesse and Lloyd Mullen of Ponderosa Publications in 2022.
A recent change was the addition of the Liberty Chronicle, allowing those in Liberty County to still have a published newspaper for their area.
One of the latest big changes was the closing of the Shelby Promoter office in the summer of 2024. While there is no longer an office open to the public, attending events, writing articles, taking photos and laying out the pages of the newspaper weekly continues.
Regardless of what changes have taken place, the newspaper continues to hit the stands and online, every week, without fail, sharing the news of the communities it serves.
While many might not see the advantage to still having a local, weekly newspaper, as pretty much anything and everything can be found online, it still serves a great purpose. Printed news cannot be altered or photoshopped, it is a hardcopy of history. It provides tangible copies of the sports photos of local athletes, obituaries that can be cut out and tucked away in family albums for future generations and serves as the place legal notices are published.
Everything changes over time, but the commitment and dedication of the employees of what is now Ponderosa Publications has not, with the majority of the employees having worked their current positions for over a decade, or longer. All take pride in the jobs they do and the obligation to providing the best newspaper possible for our communities is one thing that has, and will continue, to remain the same.

Thinking back to my first days at the Chamber Office almost 2 years ago when I started. The Shelby Promoter was one of the first Chamber Members I had any interactions with. Jen was in contact with me and right away, did an interview with me and put my picture and story on the front page of the paper! Since then I've gotten to know Jen well. In my opinion, Jen does a tremendous job reporting on Shelby events by attending, taking pictures, and great articles in the newspaper! Keep up the good work you all do for Shelby and the surrounding area.
I had the privilege of meeting the previous owners this last year as well, the Kavanaghs. While they were cleaning out one of their properties on Main Street. They invited me to take a look at old newspapers, pictures, and other old stuff in the basement that's been in storage for many years. There was a treasure trove of items. I helped clean a couple of truck loads out and took them back to the Chamber Office to sort out and organize. First I contacted the museum to see if they wanted any of these items. From there I distributed many of the old pictures, old papers, etc etc among various businesses or organizations where they could be enjoyed by the community and travelers coming through Shelby. Thank You to the Kavanaghs for thinking of the Chamber on this aspect!! That was awesome!

I'd like to introduce the newest Shelby Chamber member, True North Counseling. I was in contact with Lida less than a month ago inquiring about the Chamber, spoke to her about what we do at the Chamber and just like that, True North became a member. While I do not have any past stories to share about True North, the thing I can share is it's always great to get community involvement from a variety of backgrounds with the businesses within the Chamber! I wish Shelly the best as she gets started with her involvement at True North. When I met with Lida it was apparent to me that True North will be community minded with the Chamber, I look forward to working with them in the future!

For most in the Shelby area, you all have been in and know of Shelby Floral & Gift. For those who are unaware, it's a neat store with so much to offer beyond a floral shop with flowers, ranging from gift ideas to household furniture. Joan and her staff are always very friendly and helpful whether I am in the store on official chamber business or on personal time shopping around. Joan, like so many others in the community, supports the Chambers efforts whenever she can by providing donation items for various events, such as Chamber Banquet. Or purchasing calendars for the Main Street Flowers and other raffles the Chamber conducts, which helps fund the community projects within the Chamber. Thank you for your support! Shelby Floral has been a long standing business for years within the community owned by other great people of Shelby prior to Joan, happy to see Joan is continuing the tradition of keeping the store going alive and well into the future. I'm fairly certain Joan serves as a life saver to many guys in the Shelby area, me included… Valentine's day, birthdays, or whenever us guys needing flowers, Joan is a life saver. I remember last year walking into Shelby Floral on Valentines Day, the amount of guys standing & waiting to talk to Joan or one of her staff was unreal!

The Marias Veterinary Clinic in Shelby was established by Dr. Hardee Clark and has served the City of Shelby & surrounding areas since 1977. Hardee was raised in the Sweetgrass Hills and graduated from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. Following graduation he and his wife Debbie moved to Shelby. The clinic was initially set up in the Cinch Ring east of Shelby with the help of Bob Kalbfleisch. In 1980 Hardee built his clinic in the Shelby Industrial Park.
In 2020 Dr. Kamron Ratzburg joined the clinic moving here with his wife Camille after graduating from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Kamron also was raised in the Sweetgrass Hills on his family’s ranch.
The Marias Veterinary Clinic provides both small and large animal care. The clinic's small animal care provides preventative care services (vaccinations & wellness exams), diagnostic testing, surgery and emergency care. With large animal care we focus on the health and productivity of livestock on farms & ranches as well as equine health.

Every community needs a Veterinary Clinic, no matter if you live in an urban or rural community. It's great to have Marais Veterinary Clinic here in Shelby offering the service to the ranchers who need the large animal services along with our 4 legged fur babies needing the services they provide as well.
While at the moment I do not have any fur babies to tend too (RIP Zasha), I do plan on getting another German Shepherd hopefully this winter from a trusted friend and breeder. When I do I'll be going to see the crew at Marias Veterinary Clinic to do the doggie doctoring needed.
The crew at Marias Veterinary Clinic is always very supportive of the Chamber. One tradition the Clarks have done for many years is support the Pet & Doll Parade by providing ice cream sandwiches to all the kids that day, sponsoring the Chamber Banquet & Main Street Flowers as well! Thank you for helping and being a part of the great community we call home!
I spoke with Debbie recently about a possible event idea that the Chamber and the Vet Clinic can partner on next year. I'm excited to work on this idea with the Crew at Marias Veterinary Clinic next year and I'm positive the community will enjoy what this can turn into!

My first conversation with Lacetta was nearly 2 years ago. Back when I was looking for a place to live when I was moving to Shelby, Lacetta was one of the contacts I spoke to about housing in the area. In those conversations, she was always very friendly, helpful, responded in a timely manner and full of good advice/information. Even though it did not work out for the options she had at the time for what I was looking for, I fully appreciated her taking the time and helping me on my search for housing.
Since then I’ve gotten to know Lacetta well, on top of knowing the real estate industry well, she is very community minded. Soon as she started Home Sweet Home Realty here in Shelby, she became active with the Shelby Chamber by attending Chamber Membership Meetings, being part of the Fair parade, sponsoring Chamber Projects such as the Main Street Flowers & appreciation picnics, volunteering hours to help the chamber, along with getting involved with other activities within Shelby as well. I wish her the best and look forward to working with her into the future. If anyone is looking for housing options in the area or looking to sell, get ahold of Lacetta, she won’t steer you wrong in your quest.

In today's modern world having power/electricity is vital for all communities, obviously. Marias River Electric does a great job providing our area with the required power to maintain our way of life. The crew at MRE are great people to work on the projects Ive worked with them on. They are also community minded, our Chamber President, Shana Lee is one example of helping Shelby be the great little town we are that is employed at MRE. MRE also helps, sponsors, or donates to many good causes with the Chamber and other organizations/activities within the community, Thank You for contributing to Shelby!
The work the guys do I give them a lot of respect, credit, and kudos for. Not all days are nice and sunny. Going out into adverse weather conditions much of the time restoring the power, and the dangers the work involves in the daily tasks they perform. Thank you to those who do this on a daily basis and to the whole staff at MRE for doing what you do!

Hi, My name is Tammy Head. I have owned and operated The Griddle Restaurant in Shelby for over 19 years. I worked for 3 different owners in the same building before buying the business in May of 2005 and changing the name to The Griddle Restaurant. (My Sister Donita’s idea). I have worked in the restaurant business for 48 years and still enjoy what I'm doing.
The Griddle is a family style restaurant, we have a nice sized dining area, we also have a banquet room for meetings. We serve breakfast and lunch, our soups are always homemade. We have great food, friendly staff, service with a smile, and a great atmosphere!! Our hours are Monday-Friday 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. Come see us, you wont regret it!

This small town family restaurant is a local hot spot for coffee, breakfast or lunch. For good reason, I remember one of my first trips coming to Shelby before moving here. The Griddle was the first place I ate in town. I wanted breakfast before driving back to Miles City, sat down, obviously I wouldn’t have known her at the time, Tonia was our waitress. Had a great breakfast with great friendly service. Since then, I've been enjoying going into The Griddle ever since either having a meal or just on my work rounds chatting with whomever is working that day. Always a pleasure going into this establishment. The Griddle is one of the Restaurants the Chamber utilizes for its Chamber Board Meetings, Chamber Membership Meetings or committee meetings. The meeting room downstairs works great for these kinds of occasions. Tammy donates, sponsors, or participates in various activities/events during the year helping keep Shelby alive & active. Keep up the good work Team Griddle!

BTI was founded in 1946 by Ben Taylor, a military veteran, who bought Carter Oil Company. He then expanded his services to gas stations, farm chemicals, fuel and propane delivery. His son, Greg, joined the business, and together they provided outstanding customer service to the communities of Shelby, Cut Bank and Valier. Most importantly to Ben & Greg were their dedicated employees, many of whom worked at BTI for decades.
BTI is now a division of CityServiceValcon, a fuel distributing company located in Kalispell, Montana. CityServiceValcon was founded in 1932 and has a similar vision to BTI of growing and expanding their business through honesty and integrity, providing a great environment for employees, and giving back to their communities.
BTI is proud to serve our local communities and has supported community events and endeavors, especially those involving local youth. Over the years, countless donations have been given to the 4-H programs, schools, and special causes in Toole, Pondera, Glacier and Liberty Counties.
We have employees who volunteer regularly and the work we do in the community is perhaps our greatest asset.
We appreciate our friends, family and neighbors who have adapted to the changes that have come with the new owners and stuck with us as we still navigate the ongoing changes.

Big Sky Creative Works

Big Sky Creative Works
Shelby, Montana

Not many businesses get started accidentally, but that’s exactly what happened with Big Sky Creative Works in 2011. Barbie was looking for a new “hobby” and stumbled across creating cut vinyl decals and then using those decals to create custom decorative signs for friends and family for gifts. Lots of research on the topic led her to see the potential and take the leap, purchasing commercial equipment for those projects and things took off from there! Initially the business was limited to simple decals and custom signage purchased by friends and acquaintances and it quickly evolved into offering custom apparel, signage and more. Eventually, the business grew so much that Dave left his painting contractor business behind and took over much of the hands-on production of items Big Sky Creative Works was selling.
Over time, the equipment and product lines expanded with the addition of a larger format printer, sublimation, various heat presses and a laser. Big Sky Creative Works is well known for offering custom apparel for individuals, teams, community groups and businesses offering everything from t-shirts and hoodies to hats, beanies, etc. Business
signage ranges from wall, window and vehicle decals to posters and banners, interior and exterior business signs and more. We offer a wide variety of custom drinkware and giftware with fun graphics or business logos. No order is too large or too small. Big Sky Creative Works also does a lot of work with area businesses to create exclusive merchandise for them to sell in their own business. We really enjoy cruising around town and taking note of graphics we have provided in our community and beyond. One of our business highlights was working with the local community on our exclusive “Fight of the Century” product line to commemorate the 2023 Centennial of the Dempsey Gibbons World Championship fight right here in Shelby, Montana! Many of those products were shipped all over the US and even internationally!
Some folks come to us with completed designs and others come to us with an idea and we help bring those visions to reality. Big Sky Creative Works makes every effort to provide professional, reasonably priced products and results to our clientele and we would love to work with you, your business or community group. Feel free to message us through our Big Sky Creative Works Facebook page, email us at barbie@bsc.works or phone 406-966-4264 to talk about your next project!

In this week's feature, Big Sky Creative Works, is a great small town/home based business that fills a need for various projects around the area. I have worked with Barbie on various projects and all have turned out great. Not only does Big Sky Creative Works fill the need for projects around the area, Dave & Barbie are community minded. Barbie has served on the Chamber Board of Directors, and has sponsored many events the Chamber Hosts throughout the year among many other community events! Thank You! I would like to make a plug for a couple of the events I have helped get started here in Shelby this last year on behalf of Big Sky Creative Works. The Job/Career Fair & the Activity Fair. For any business or organization who participates in these kinds of events here in Shelby or elsewhere, where a table or booth is displayed highlighting your business or organization. Barbie makes great banners and/or table clothes with your business/organization name or logos on them. Looks very professional for a really reasonable price! Keep up the good work Dave & Barbie!
Turkey Bucks
Feature Business of the Week: Turkey Bucks Program
Written By: Angie Welker
In 2008 when I became the Albertsons Deli Manager I was asked to participate. The first year we raised a little over $600 feeling very accomplished. I made it a goal to make sure every year was better than the last. In the beginning it was a turkey dinner, and we boxed them in the back room, it was fun and this store loves turkey bucks. We raise more money right here in Shelby than they do in some of the big cities. We are very proud of this program. I am currently the bakery manager and still heading this program up although it's not a bakery program because of my love for it. We do most of our fundraising outside of the store via Donations and events. We appreciate every dime that is given! Our first event of the season is Homecoming football game night (9/20) . We will be partnering with Shelby Paint & Hardware and Tim Moylan. Look for more information soon, Indian Tacos, music and the bounce house! A few years ago, the program changed to gift cards to our store instead of turkey dinners. I think this is awesome so that people can get staples they need, with the exception of tobacco and alcohol. For many years now, Chad Scarborrough (First Baptist Church) has taken care of the delivery of the funds. If you know anyone in need, reach out to him, he does a fantastic job! I want to close by saying "THANK YOU" to all past and present donors, anyone that has helped in any way you are appreciated!
Written By: Shane Adams
Selecting this week's feature, while Turkey Bucks is not a business. I feel this program should be featured with the positive impact this has within the community for individuals and families. It is great to see members of the community helping others in our community making a difference. With one of their events coming up soon at the Homecoming Game in September, it's a great time to feature this program to help get the word out. I too, thank those who have organized the efforts, donated past & present. Keep up the great work! The Chamber earmarks 10% of the proceeds made during the annual pie sale every year to the Turkey Bucks Program. This year's Chamber Pie sale will be November 26.

Not only did they sign up, they upgraded to the Copper Tier Membership Level. Thank You! I've gotten to know Seth, the manager at Albertsons over the last few months since he took on this role. I praise his work that he has accomplished. He's been great to work with, the employees I've talked to really enjoy & respect him as a manager, and top it off… Very Community Minded. Just on the Chamber side of things, Albertsons supported the Chamber Banquet, August Cash Calendar (Main Street Flowers), appreciation picnics, and handed out water at various events such as the Marias Fair Parade, attended Chamber Membership Meetings all while under his leadership so far! Looking forward to working with the crew at Albertsons into the future! Thank you Albertsons for being a great asset to this community! I for one am excited to see the future remodel project Seth talked about in his section above. In the conversations I've had with Seth on the topic, the updates will be very much appreciated by everyone once it is all completed!
Cedar Closet
Feature Business of the Week: Cedar Closet

Cedar Closet
317 Main Street
Shelby, Montana 59474
(406) 424-8123
Cedar Closet store hours: Tuesday-Friday 10 am-3 pm, Saturday 10 am-2 pm
Both Cedar Closet and Gift Closet are operated by the Toole County Medical Auxiliary, which are run by volunteers. There are no paid positions in TCMA. We help raise funds and all proceeds go toward medical equipment, the care center, assisted living facility and scholarships for Toole County students going into medical fields.
TCMA raises money through hosting different events throughout the year. Rummage Sales, Valentines Day Bake Sales, Parade of Homes, and the Christmas Tree of Lights. Cedar Closet and the rummage sales have been the main contributors in their donating efforts.
Our community has many people who do not have the resources, or have limited access to travel, to find clothing and other basic needs. Our store has a lot to offer and after the fire, the community came together with their time, support, and many donations. After the fire damage was repaired, we’ve received many compliments from our customers on how beautiful the store is. We still have our $5.00 Clothing Bag Sale the 1st Saturday of every month as well as other sales throughout the year.
You can drop off bags of clothing after cleaning out your closets, or household items as you purchase new ones. These donations help others to find and afford these essential daily items. We’ve been serving the community for over 30 years, and this wouldn't be possible without the generous donations and our volunteers. Cedar Closet, Gift Closet and Toole County Medical Auxiliary are on Facebook!

For most in the Shelby community, you all know about the Cedar Closet. For those who do not, it's a great store that Shelby has to offer with good buys. I am impressed with what the volunteers have done with that store after the fire. They worked together to make that process quick to get back opened, the store looks great, along with a great selection! If you have not been in the Cedar Closet since they reopened after the fire, I highly recommend going in to check it out! I have worked with many of the volunteers of the cedar closet on various projects, they are all hardworking and very community minded. We are truly blessed in our community to have a store like this locally!

Shelby, Montana 59474
The Toole County Health Foundation was formed in 2002 with the Mission “to raise and distribute funds to maintain, improve and enhance health care in Toole County and the surrounding area. Over the last 2 decades the Toole County Health Foundation has raised funds for Family Care Suites, items for pediatric care, the Brittain Home, feasibility study, MRU - C Scan, Lifeline Program, Fetal Heart Monitors, patio furniture for the Care Center as well as in room recliners: and most recently we have remodeled 3 rooms at the Care Center and spilt the cost of the sprinkler system installation and Landscaping at the Brittain Home.
We find funding through a couple of ways.
1)Annual Golf Tournament held August 3 this year at the spectacular Marias Valley Golf and Country Club. With 18 teams and many sponsors this year, this great event helps raise money for our mission and provides the community with a fun golf event too.
2)Trip of the Month drawings. Each month we conduct a drawing for a destination trip! Proceeds from this also goes towards our cause. Keep an eye for the remaining trips this year in the drawings and when the next Trip of the Month raffle will be again. Trips range all across the US, and even into Canada or Mexico. Board Members of Toole County Health Foundation include: Billiette Coolidge, Bonnie Nickol, Allen Underdal, Marigail Anderson, Marla Hasquet, Teri White & Lauri Tokerud

While brainstorming different businesses or organizations to feature this week. I found it very fitting to feature Toole County Health Foundation this week now. One of their main fundraisers was this past weekend (Golf Tournament) along with the Trip of the Month Raffle. Organizations like this help the community in so many great ways by channeling the mission efforts where they are needed. I know the foundation is in good hands by the board members serving the mission statement. I have experience with many of them and have helped the Chamber by being members of the Chamber, donating to the Chamber, or volunteering their time to the Chamber. Great group of people. If you would like to get involved or learn more information about this great organization, Toole County Health Foundation please visit their Facebook page or speak directly with one of the board members.

Clark’s Family Restaurant is a restaurant that has been operated by Amy Clark since 2020. I was born and raised in the Shelby area, and have been in the food/bar industry for 20+ plus years in one way or another. I love the area and have been enjoying the business journey of owning and operating Clark’s Family Restaurant. The menu includes many varieties such as: Burgers, pastas, appetizers, specials, and a salad bar just to name a few items. Also available is ice cream, milk shakes, beer, and liquor too. Attached to the building is a large patio to enjoy the nice weather or listen to a local band perform on selected evenings, whether just yourself or wanting to reserve for a family or social gathering. Along with a meeting room to host meetings or small gatherings. It is really a fun restaurant to be in and be a part of in this great little community helping the locals and travelers passing through the area. The support from the Shelby businesses and people is really wonderful as well. Stop in and check us out!

One key ingredient needed in a community is places to eat. With various sporting events, school activities, travelers passing through, and locals wanting to eat out; restaurants play a vital role to the economy & well being within the community. Clark’s Family Restaurant is one of those places to get something to eat. As the Chamber, we rotate through the membership of Restaurants to host our Chamber Membership Meetings, Chamber Board Meetings, and committee meetings. Clark’s is one of the Chamber restaurants we rotate through.
I like what Amy is trying to do this summer too. Inviting musicians to play at Clark’s on the large patio outside (weather permitting), gives the community another option to go do here in Shelby. Go out to eat while listening to some tunes, or just go out to enjoy the evening with a drink and listen to the music. I've been out to Clark’s a couple of times this summer while the music is going, the atmosphere is great and inviting! Keep up the good work!
Live Music schedule for the month of August:
Wheelhouse: August 9 & 16
Ricochet Rick: August 2, 17, 24
Witts End: August 1, 6, 14, 20

In 2010 we started raising grass fed beef on the prairie of North Central Montana. We strive to make sure that our animals are treated with respect and get everything they need to live out their lives in comfort and happiness. We are dedicated to our livestock’s well being from the time they are born on our ranch, until the time they leave. Our animals graze lush green grass and cover crops in the summer and eat locally produced, quality hay in the harsher winter months. When we started selling beef, we sold "beef on the hoof", also known as "wholes and halves". We have since expanded our meat sales by offering hamburger and beef by the cut. We carry your common steaks and roasts, as well as hamburger. We are certain that our beef, no matter what the cut, is guaranteed to please any guest you serve.

It's nice having some good options for locally raised Montana beef in the area that you can go purchase here in Shelby & Sunburst. Happy Steer became a member of the chamber this spring, but they have supported the Chamber even before becoming a member. I have asked for small donations in the past on various activities and they always help out whatever cause I am working on to help the community. For example, last fall I needed a small gift for who had the best Scare Zone during the Zombie Fun Run. I received a gift card to use as an award. Thank You for your support! If you're wanting good quality Montana Beef, give Happy Steer a try. Stop on down at the KW Insurance Agency in either Shelby or Sunburst to purchase. The Sunburst location has all cuts, whereas Shelby has a select variety of cuts for purchase.
4-H

Everyone knows that 4-H is historically about working with livestock such as pigs, steers, goats, or sheep, but not everyone in the community lives on a farm or has attainable land for housing livestock. We are seeing an increase in indoor projects, such as robotics and archery. These are projects that everyone can do and are low cost to participate.
4-H is a youth program The Toole County 4-H program has grown to one hundred twenty members. 4-H is a youth development organization that provides hands-on learning experiences to help young people develop skills in leadership, citizenship, and life. The name “4-H” represents the organization’s commitment to the development of the Head, Heart, Hands, and Health of its participants, which are the four H’s in the program pledge.
-Head: Managing, thinking
-Heart: Relating, caring
-Hands: Giving, working
-Health: Being, living
4-H is supported by cooperative extension systems in each state and is active in rural, urban and suburban communities. It aims to equip young people with skills and confidence they need to thrive in their personal and professional lives.
Agent Kim Woodring and admin, Jackie Stratton, have been attending local trade shows and school events to get information out about 4-H. The most popular projects are robotics, archery, and livestock projects.
Our robotics program has really blossomed with the help of our wonderful leader, Barb Larsen, and a few local grants to obtain more tablets and lego kits. The youth members build the lego kits and then program the robots with their tablets. There are so many options of what to build and it is so fun to see what they decide and how they program the robots.
The archery program, led by Brent & Julean Hanson has thirty-six members. They have two different shooting times to accommodate all the members. They are adding new leaders as well.
The livestock program is combined with the Four County Marias Fair and they average around 70 steers, 60 hogs, 20 sheep and 15 goats. The Marias Fair has another record sale with half a million-dollar sale with only 94 animals.
We started new enrollment this year with an Open House at the Extension Office. Families interested in 4-H were invited to stop by and ask questions about 4-H, get more information, and sign up for 4-H.
At the end of the year, we celebrated our 4-H members and all of their hard work through the year with our annual Achievement Day. This year we decided to host a dinner for the families and the volunteers. This was a great way to celebrate the end of the year and for the 4-H members to get to know each other.
To learn more about 4-H please visit the Toole County Extension office located in the basement of the Toole County Courthouse. The new 4-H year begins in October and will be starting new member enrollments and re-enrollments after October 1st.

With the Fair Season upon us, I asked Kim if she would like to write a feature on 4-H, as I thought it's a great and fitting time to highlight this great organization with the upcoming fair. Please visit Marias Fair 4-H facebook page for the 4-H Calendar of events this week during the fair. I'll be assisting 4-H this wednesday for the Chicken Judging, I offered if they needed any help I’d be willing to do so. Within 2 hours of offering I got a call asking if I would do the judging! Looking forward to being around some chickens again…. Back in Miles City I sold a bunch of eggs from my flock…

I have worked with Kim on other projects where her line of work and the Chambers overlap, Kim and Jackie, are always willing, eager and helpful to help out. Such as the Farmers Market. I was asked a few months ago by Lorette Carter if I would be interested in filling in on her role for the farmers market going forward, since she is retired now. Kim, Jackie, and Lorette ran that event in the past years. The Chamber assumed Lorette’s role now, our first Farmers Market was last week. We split up the responsibilities and everything is working great. Stop down to see us during the Farmers Market. Every Thursday from now through Sept 12 at City Park, 4-6 PM.

I’d like to welcome the newest member of the Shelby Area Chamber of Commerce, Tana Murray of Running River Creative. Many of you who are reading this have seen her work, or maybe even stopped by to chat while she was painting the Mural on the Side of Home Sweet Home Realty (Formly Tiber Agency) back in June. Lorette Carter lined up Tana for this project commissioned via the Shelby TBID organization, in the meantime I took over part of Lorette's position on TBID since she retired. I got to know Tana while working to complete this mural project. Tana was always prompt and easy to work with on this project while we worked through the transition period to its completion. As you all can see by the mural, it turned out great! She's truly a great artist! Within a week of completing the mural, Running River Creative signed up to become a Shelby Chamber member as she was impressed with our small town vibe of Shelby and wanted to show her support back to Shelby! Thank you for the reciprocating support! If any of the Shelby local businesses are looking to possibly put a personal touch on your business with a mural inside or outside of your place of business, or any other artwork, give Tana a shout out.
